This idea that everything must be harmonious, happy and pleasant is like the kind of unrealistic – and, frankly, banal – vision of the world sold by almost everyone on Instagram. Those that had an English class in high school might not recognize them from the book, though. Huxley’s dystopia has now made it to the small screen. Everything and everyone functions to uphold the restrictive social order, one in which harmony and happiness is the only aspiration, while they swan around in clothes straight out of a COS catalogue.

They’re both a bit off, Bernard because his gangling frame (accentuated by his loose clothes) mirrors how insufficient he is as an upper-cruster and Lenina because she’s been sleeping with the same guy for a few months—a big no-no. Those spherical, translucent pills — in yellow, orange and red, signifying different levels of intensity — dot New London, but each resident also carries around their own metallic Pez dispenser.

In a utopia whose perfection hinges upon control of monogamy and privacy, members of the collective begin to question the rules, putting their regimented society on a collision course with forbidden love and revolution. There’s John’s acclimation; the love triangle with him, Bernard, and Lenina; the suicide subplot; the stirring unrest (catalyzed by John’s arrival); and a Westworld-like sidestory that answers the least necessary question of all: Where did this dystopia COME from? Thoughtfully creepy sci-fi has lots of sex and violence. The nine-part debut season feels like it's built on miscalculation atop miscalculation, but the gravest one is that the citizens of New London are effectively extraterrestrials. The introduction of New London, a futuristic society that prohibits privacy, monogamy, and traditional family units, is immediately compelling, as is its strict caste system and reliance on antidepressants that are dispensed like Pez candy.

Each person in New London is assigned a caste and genetically modified to the limits of that caste at conception – alpha, beta, gamma, delta and epsilon – and their station in life is determined purely by their classification. At least, not yet. Embracing peace and order after the bloody chaos of the first world war, people have used technology to radically simplify their society. The TV series is a weirdly weightless offering: a dystopia without lessons for the present day. Brave New World premieres Wednesday, July 15th on Peacock. Peacock leans into timeliness with its inaugural lineup of original series: In addition to the surveillance drama of The Capture, the new streamer is offering up a Brave New World adaptation from Homecoming ’s David Wiener. Bernard and Lenina are vacationing in Savage Lands, a theme park modelled a little too closely on Westworld in which people act out the supposedly sinful values of the old order for the entertainment of tourists.

Brave New World premiered on July 15, 2020, on Peacock in United States, and Sky One in the UK on October 2, 2020.

“Over time they get bent, diluted—less vivid.” Bent, diluted, and deluded are all good ways to describe this take on Brave New World.

But any bold chiaroscuro referencing the artwork is set aside in favor of visuals packed with 2D digital Indra icons in subjective point-of-view shots, generic flattened background FX, or yet another rave-lit orgy. How do people from the different classes treat each other and why? Take it, you’ll feel better even if you end up feeling nothing. What would be some of the pros and cons of living in either society?

None of that toughness makes it to the screen. One of those savages is John (Ehrenreich), a music-loving prop hand crushing on the wrong woman, and who lives with his alcoholic mother Linda (Demi Moore). That said, Brave New World also wastes no time showcasing its preference for style -- and sex -- over substance. Share your TV and movies obsessions | @wenleima. The show's fictional society forbids monogamy, so sexual themes are strong throughout. At the other end of the social scale, Epsilons would struggle to find anything to do in today’s automated factories. The cracks only show if you aspire to better things. In other respects, however, Huxley’s dystopia has been superseded by new threats. Why are New London's citizens categorized into different social classes? Weddings in the Savage Lands are an amusing farce (unlike so much of the straightened-out series’ dystopia) meant to highlight the dangerous, backwards, and unhappy ways of those outside of perfect New London. Then Huxley visited the US, and what he made of society there – brash, colourful, shallow and self-obsessed – set the engines of his imagination speeding. The upcoming Brave New World TV series, which debuts on NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service later this month, not only proves that sentiment wrong, …

The two do not mix well.

42%. John doesn’t cling to Shakespeare as his one source of contraband human culture; he cleans a car to Car Seat Headrest, playing from what looks like an old iPod duct-taped to a promotional flash drive, and acts like any Joe Blow. That means the alphas are revered and have the best jobs and perks and the epsilons don’t even have real names and live only to be service drones. John eventually ends up in New London, which he has a stronger connection to than his humble existence in the Savage Lands would suggest.

All Rights Reserved. Did this dystopia need another villain beyond its own pleasure-seeking populace? The potential eugenic applications of CRISPR gene editing keep many a medical ethicist awake at night. by John (Alden Ehrenreich) lives here alongside his immodest and ultimately unimportant mother Linda (Demi Moore). Through some silly plot contrivances—no sillier than what’s to come—including an entirely uninteresting suicide investigation subplot, Lenina and Bernard galavant off to the Savage Lands outside the utopia, where humanity as it once was is preserved … kind of. Alden Ehrenreich to Star in Brave New World TV Series By Scott Russell April 17, 2019 | 10:53am Brave New World Adaptation Ordered to Series at … Season 1 Review: “Brave New World” begins as mostly serious and dystopian, but by episode four there’s a shift in tone.
